In My Room is about my existential thoughts, you guessed it — in my room! Here, I share my ideas and questions about identity, personal style, relationships, and mental health. I’m taking these thoughts and putting them online so that maybe someone somewhere in their room feels a little less lonely on their journey, too.
Hi friends,
I hope you’ve been well and taking care of yourself. It feels a little silly to be writing about clothes during the current state of the world. At the same time, this newsletter is one of my few hobbies that brings me joy and I’m afraid that if I wait for the state of the world to be OK, well that day may never come. Not to sound all dark and doomed; I just wanted to take a sec to recognize that.
I recently watched a video by creator Katie Robinson about “doomshopping vs. no buys” which talks about the two opposing trends happening at the same time. For those who don’t know, doomshopping is when you basically say fuck it, and decide to spend your money on whatever you want because the world is going to end anyway and there’s no point in saving your money. On the other hand, a lot of people are participating in “no buy” challenges as a way to curb their consumption habits and save some money along the way.
Coincidentally, I also watched a video by ninaluciaw explaining why she won’t be participating in any “no buy” challenges. It was interesting to watch these different stances on shopping habits and it got me thinking about my own.
I’ve tried to do a no buy challenge in the past and ultimately ended up failing. I agreed with ninaluciaw’s argument that these challenges resemble fad diets that don’t result in forming better habits and instead lead to binge eating or returning to your old ways. However, while these challenges might be a temporary fix, I have also heard people share the way it works as a dopamine detox and how shopping becomes less of a crutch.
With all this said and because we just started a new month, I have decided to do a 30-day no buy challenge. I’m mostly curious to see what feelings come up as someone who uses online shopping as a distraction, what I choose to spend my time on instead, and how much money I save compared to previous months.
Here are my rules for the next 30 days:
No new clothes, shoes, bags, or accessories (including second-hand)
Tailoring and altering clothes I already own is acceptable
No online window shopping for things to add to my wishlist
These seem straightforward enough. Let’s see how I do. Now, for the outfits!
DAY 1
If you didn’t know this already, I’m a UFC fan and I went with my brothers and cousin to the live event in Anaheim. I had so much fun but do wish I had dressed a little warmer because it was freezing inside the venue. I don’t hate this outfit but I also don’t love it. I’ve realized that if I’m going to wear a dress with a looser jacket, it’s best to wear a bodycon or tighter-fitting dress and I think that’s what would’ve made this better.
Denim jacket: ThredUp, dress: ThredUp, boots: hand-me-downs, bag: Madewell
DAY 2
I immediately took the baseball cap off in the car and didn’t take another picture when I got home. I think it’s too much with the baseball cap and I look like a tourist haha. However, I did like it without the hat. I wore this to do some returns and shopping with my mother. This was so comfy and I’ll be rewearing it when the weather warms up with other combinations of sneakers and bags.
Dress: ThredUp, short sleeve: Cotton On, sneakers: Reebok, bag: eBay
DAY 3
This outfit was after a night out to celebrate my cousin’s birthday. The goal was to be comfy but I think white sneakers would’ve made this more acceptable. I just bought this jacket from my brother and I o v e it. I dislike baseball but I love a baggy men’s jacket.
Jacket: secondhand, t-shirt: Cotton On, clogs: Quince, bag: Prada, sunnies: Ray-Ban
DAY 4
Sooo I didn’t like this outfit. I had tried it on before and loved it but after actually wearing it out, I realized I won’t be wearing it again. To be fair, it was cold this day but it felt very conservative and I just didn’t feel like myself. On the plus side, experimenting has also taught me what I don’t like which is just as important as what I do like.
Sweater: ThredUp, black dress: ThredUp, belt: Madewell, boots: hand-me-downs, bag: Poshmark
DAY 5
This is my favorite outfit of the bunch! I recently heard tomboy femme is a thing and that feels very me. This bag is one of the few animal print items I own and I think it, along with my jewelry, gave this outfit the feminine touch it needed. I’ll definitely wear this again.
Vans denim pants: Crossroads, t-shirt: Cotton On, corduroy jacket: Crossroads, boots: Rue La La, bag: Depop
DAY 6
This outfit was a little too boyish for me. I think it’s the fact that everything is so loose and chunky. I think I’d swap the shirt and jacket for a tight-fitted long-sleeve.
Agolde jeans: ThredUp, t-shirt: ThredUp, corduroy jacket: Crossroads, clogs: Quince, bag: Staud
DAY 7
Sigh, another miss… This was my first time wearing this jacket and I think it just might not be for me. I don’t like the fit of it and it doesn’t feel like it’s my style. The good news is, I found these Adidas at NordstromRack for $60! They’re not the sambas but look just like them and are super comfy. I’d wear this again with either my black or brown leather jacket and maybe a beret and a pair of black boots.
Agolde jeans: ThredUp, turtleneck: ThredUp, cashmere sweater: ThredUp, leather faux fur jacket: Poshmark, adidas: NordstromRack, bag: Staud
Please comment below and let me know which outfit is your favorite <3
Thanks for reading my newsletter. I hope you’ll stick around for more. If someone you know will enjoy this, please share it with them. Besos!
Obsessed with Day 4 & sad you didn’t like Day 3 or 7 fits because I think they’re a slay! That burnt orange jacket is screaming my style so I’ll snatch it up if u don’t want it hehe
