In My Room is about my existential thoughts, you guessed it — in my room! Here, I share my ideas and questions about identity, adulting, relationships, and mental health. I’m taking these thoughts and putting them online so that maybe someone somewhere in their room feels a little less lonely on their journey, too.
Hi sweet friends,
How are you? Hope you’ve been well and taking care of yourself. I want to start by saying thank you so much to everyone who commented and/or reached out with such positive things to say about this outfits segment. Like I said last time, I had a ton of fun creating this so it was really heartwarming to know that some of you enjoyed it which is enough for me to keep doing it! Also, I know I titled it ‘Five Days, Five Fits’ when there were actually six outfits. Oops, I am just a human.
Anyway, California was recently hit with a lot of rain, more rain than most of us are used to which means I didn’t have much motivation to get dressed every day. I’m sure many of you can relate. On the days I did get dressed it was because I left my house. I said I wanted to move away from sweatpants and PJs but honestly, consecutive rainy days make me a little sad and comfort was the priority and I’m okay with that.
Anyway, because the weather has been colder, I’ve come to accept that I have more than enough coats and jackets and that’s one area of my closet that I need to stop shopping for. As a Californian, there’s no reason for me to have as many as I do! There’s a black wool coat I’ve talked about before and you’ll see down below that the more time that passes, the more I realize it’s perfect for me and I don’t need another one. Every time I purchase another one, it doesn’t come close to my black one and I end up returning it.
That’s been a new lesson from this experiment: If I already own something that I’d prefer to wear instead of this new item I’m thinking of buying, then I shouldn’t buy it. Don’t spend money on something mid when you already own a slay..? In other words —don’t fix what aint broken.
Something else I’ve enjoyed about documenting my outfits is being able to get a better sense of my style. It makes it easier to decide if an item is worth buying because I can identify if it will fit in well with what I already own. At the same time, creating these cute looks with what’s in my closet is a reminder that I don’t need more. On this journey of trying to be a more sustainable shopper, I know that the most sustainable and environmentally friendly action I can take is to buy less and that includes second-hand shopping too. *cries*
Shopping my closet doesn’t have to be boring. It sparks something in me and reminds me that style is created not bought. Below are some looks I put together recently.
DAY 1
I can’t remember exactly what I did this day but it involved going over to my parents’ house to do laundry and watch UFC. I had to redeem myself from the last outfit where I wore this denim jacket to show you all why I love it so much. It’s the perfect amount of ‘oversized’ and it reminds me of baddies from the 90s that were so effortlessly cool. You can’t tell in the photo but I’m wearing a sweater vest on top of a black turtle neck long sleeve. I hadn’t worn this sweater vest before and had considered getting rid of it (giving it to someone else NOT throwing it in the trash) but after wearing it this day, I’ve decided to keep it and see how else I can style it. I would’ve preferred to wear white socks with my Mary Janes but all of mine were dirty hence why I needed to do laundry. Still, I do think the black socks look cute and maybe white ones would’ve made this look too school girl-ish which isn’t bad but not necessarily my vibe. So in love with the subtle pop of color this crossbody bag adds.

DAY 2
On Sunday, I went to church with my parents. I am not religious and am not a practicing Catholic anymore but I decided to go because I wanted to spend some time with them and I’m a chismosa and wanted to see the people I grew up seeing every weekend. Getting ready for church gave me nostalgia for when my mom, sister, and I would get ready— never casual and always showing up ready to slay. I decided to wear a mini skirt to remind the church where I stand and that I’m now a rebel who can’t be controlled with their Catholic guilt — HA.
Coat: hand-me-down, long sleeve: Cotton On, skirt: ThredUp, boots: hand-me-down, bag: eBay.
Sunday was chilly, so after church, I went home and changed into something warmer to hangout with my family and get dragged by my siblings for going to church with my parents. They think I’m really going through it and tbh, I probably am hehe. A sweat set with a wool coat is my favorite outfit for when I want to be cozy but still look put together. I chose these sneakers and bag to add some fun. Also, look at the curls. We love a good hair day.
Coat: hand-me-down, sweat set: Uniqlo, sneakers: New Balance, crossbody bag: eBay.
DAY 3
This day I went to a women’s circle. It’s once a month and has been my way of being in community and healing with other women. It’s beautiful and I love it. The last few times I’ve gone, I’ve dressed extremely comfortably which is fine, but I wanted to try a little more this day which also led me to be late. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the Mary Janes but looking back at this photo, I love this look and it’s actually one of my favorites. This brown leather jacket can be a little masculine or androgynous, and I think the shoes and bag add a nice feminine balance to the whole look which is the harmony I aim for. I think I look pretty cool.
Leather jacket: ThredUp, t-shirt: GAP, Mary Janes: Zara, bag: Poshmark, puppy: Leila.
Later that day, my sister and I joined my parents to go out to eat. Do I hang out with my family all the time? Yes. Do I love it? Yes. Do I miss them and want to move back in with them? No. I looove this fit and felt like such a baddie, especially when the Gen Z server at Texas Roadhouse said she liked my outfit and “it’s a slay.” These fleece-lined tights are the best invention and now I love wearing skirts and dresses all the time. I can’t wait to wear this again. Praise the hair gods for blessing me with another good hair day.
Leather jacket: ThredUp, black dress: ThredUp, J.Crew navy knit sweater: Crossroads, fleece-lined tights: Amazon, boots: hand-me-down, bag: Poshmark, puppy: Leila.
DAY 4
I’ve been enjoying my Mary Janes, so I decided to wear them again. I also wanted something flat that wasn’t a sneaker. Still not sure how I feel about the cuffed jeans but I committed to wearing them this way the whole day. This chunky turtle-neck sweater is one of my second-hand treasures. I wear it so much! I’m usually an X-small or Small, but this is a Medium and the fit is perfect because I wanted something roomier. This tote is a J.Crew dupe for The Row tote which I’m obsessed with because it’s so simple yet chic. I got mine on sale during Black Friday. I like how simple this outfit is and yet it still looks like I tried a little bit..? Will definitely wear this again.
